ABOUT SGMP

SGMP is a national association for individuals involved in planning government meetings and for the companies who provide facilities or services to those planners. Our membership includes employees of federal, state and local governments, as well as contract meeting planners, who manage government meetings on a full or part-time basis.

Our mission is to enhance and promote the expertise of government meeting professionals. Our objectives are to improve the quality of, and to promote the cost-effectiveness of, government meetings.  SGMP is the only national organization in the U.S. dedicated exclusively to government meetings.  We deliver our membership the value of education, resources, and networking to members through local chapters.  All of our members pledge to uphold our Code of Ethics.  SGMP is one of 31 organizations represented in the Conventions Industry Council (CIC) that promotes professionalism within the meetings, conventions and exhibitions industry.

The Society is governed by a national board of directors who are elected every two years by their member peers and is managed by an association management staff in the greater Washington, DC, area.  Each chapter elect their own local leaders and hold monthly meetings in their respective areas.

ABOUT THE OLD DOMINION CHAPTER OF SGMP

Welcome to the Old Dominion Chapter of the Society of Government Meeting Professionals (SGMP) website.  No matter how many meetings, conventions, or conferences you plan or host, our organization is sure to offer valuable tools and industry contacts to help make you successful in your career.

Educational programming is key to our mission at SGMP. Old Dominion is proud to offer its members with some of the highest quality educational programs available in the world of meeting planning professional organizations.  Old Dominion is the proud winner of the Program of the Year award at SGMP's National Education Conference for the years of 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2017.  Our track record of developing and presenting unique, fun, and educational programs further illustrates our commitment to education.  Programs such as "Judge Judy," "Galloping to Contract Success," and "Meeting Monopoly" are a few examples of our award winning programs that reinforce meeting planning principles while entertaining our attendees in the process.

Networking is another of our objectives, and our monthly program meetings offer an excellent opportunity for suppliers and planners to interact together and build relationships.  The contacts and friendships made through Old Dominion last a career and a lifetime.  If you are not currently a member, contact one of the board members listed in the "board" tab of the website for information or join us at our next monthly program meeting.

A third objective of SGMP is professional development.  Through attendance and involvement with Old Dominion SGMP, many of our members have been inspired to seek out professional certifications in the hospitality and meeting planning industry including the CGMP (Certified Government Meeting Professional), the CMP (Certified Meeting Professional), and the CHSP (Certified Hospitality Sales Professional) designations.  The National Education Conference, typically held during May of each year, is a valuable experience whether you are a planner looking for advanced educational opportunities or a supplier looking to showcase your property on a national level.
